In a bold move to tackle the infrastructural challenges in Nasarawa State’s public schools, Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved the immediate procurement of 15,716 desks for distribution to primary schools across the state.
This was made known by the Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Kassim Muhammed-Kassim, during a media briefing in Lafia. He explained that the governor’s swift decision followed reports of alarming conditions uncovered during unscheduled visits to several public primary schools.
“After presenting the dismal condition of classroom furniture to Governor Sule, he approved the supply of 15,716 desks without delay,” Dr. Muhammed-Kassim said. “He also instructed the contractor to complete delivery within one month so that students can start learning in a more dignified environment.”
The SUBEB chairman, known for his on-the-ground leadership style, disclosed that his team had visited several schools and documented appalling scenes: children sitting on bare floors, broken furniture, and overcrowded classrooms with no seating.
“In some schools, pupils are forced to stand or lean against walls during lessons. It’s unacceptable,” he stated. “But change is on the way.”
Dr. Muhammed-Kassim reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revamping the state’s education infrastructure, describing the initiative as part of a broader strategy to make public basic education more attractive and effective.
“Governor Sule is fully supportive of our reforms. We are determined to deliver results and improve learning conditions for all children in Nasarawa,” he concluded.
