In a vibrant showcase of culture and creativity, students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) recently staged a compelling dramatization of the legendary story of Moremi Ajasoro. The production was at the heart of the third edition of the widely acclaimed UNILAG in Town series, held in Lagos, drawing a large, captivated audience eager to witness the fusion of performing and visual arts.
The performance aimed to reignite cultural pride and foster a deeper sense of identity among Nigerian youths by highlighting historical African narratives. The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, stressed the significance of the initiative during her address at the event.
“When I assumed office in 2022, part of my vision was to help decolonise our minds,” she noted. “While we have political independence, many of us are still mentally bound by foreign ideologies.”
Prof. Ogunsola emphasised that many Nigerian youths lack historical awareness, often leading to feelings of inferiority and low self-worth.
“We need to revisit our history and celebrate figures like Moremi Ajasoro, who embody sacrifice and courage—values we urgently need in contemporary Nigeria,” she explained.
According to Educa.ng, the production attracted the largest crowd yet since the initiative’s inception. Prof. Ogunsola announced plans to expand the program in future editions to involve more academic departments and student groups.
Director of the production, Adeniran Makinde, who also serves as President of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners, praised the collaborative process with students, stating it offered a rich blend of professional mentorship and cultural education.
