Educa.ng reports that private universities like Bells University of Technology are laying the foundation for Africa’s digital advancement, with Generation Z set to lead the charge. This was the consensus at Bells University’s 20th anniversary event held in Ota, Ogun State, themed “The Future of Africa and Generation Z.”

The milestone event brought together academic leaders, industry professionals, and students to explore how Gen Z can drive digital innovation. Exhibitions, debates, and mentorship sessions helped highlight practical ways of preparing students for fast-evolving careers in tech, design, and digital marketing.

Bayode Oke, Country Lead at InstantRad Nigeria, described Gen Z as uniquely equipped to drive digital progress.

“This generation thrives on innovation. Their passion for change and technology makes them natural leaders for a digital Africa. Bells University is giving them the right platform to lead,” he said.

Dr. Oluwadamilola Alabi, the Student Adviser at Bells, called for policy reforms to recognize the vital role private universities are playing in Nigeria’s academic ecosystem.

“From humble beginnings, we now have over 4,000 students and robust research partnerships. Private universities are doing the heavy lifting in education innovation and deserve more governmental support,” she said.

She specifically urged the government to extend research funding opportunities to private institutions that are driving new knowledge frontiers.

Architect and Bells alumnus Okon Edikan-Michael said his years at Bells equipped him with more than just academic skills.

“Bells shaped my mindset. We learned how to face real-world challenges creatively. That’s the edge Gen Z students need,” he noted.

Student organizer Abarikwu Anulike Ebere Rikwu reiterated the university’s focus on preparing students for future leadership in digital industries.

“We planned this event to demonstrate how Gen Z can take on the world—from software development to fashion-tech,” she added.

The week-long celebration will conclude with a dinner gala and a special showcase of student innovations aimed at solving real-world problems.
